It was during this time that he began his introduction to metalsmithing while working with a sculptor.
In 1969, seeking a life closer to nature, Michael and his wife, Karen, relocated to a small town in northeast Maine. They supported their family through various jobs, all while Michael honed his skills in jewelry making. A pivotal moment came in 1977 when he took a workshop with Finnish metalsmith Heikki Seppa, where he learned the fundamentals of anticlastic raising—a technique that would become the cornerstone of his artistry.
Michael's innovative approach to jewelry design has earned him numerous prestigious awards, including Intergold, Diamonds Today, and Diamonds International. His work challenges traditional definitions of jewelry, making him a leading figure in contemporary American jewelry design.
