Our Story

150 Years In The Making

Welcome to the Family

Springer’s Jewelers is a coastal New England family-owned chain of jewelry stores in the downtowns of Bath, Portland and Portsmouth, that provides high quality fine jewelry to thousands of New England patrons and visitors. Since 1870, Springer’s Jewelers has celebrated their clientele’s most important life moments. We are Maine’s oldest operating jewelry store and are one of the oldest fine jewelers in the United States.

Trusted Jewelers Since 1870

Springer’s Jewelers was established in 1870 by George T. Springer in nearby Saccarappa (now Westbrook, Maine) offering a wide range of optical goods, stationery, and artists materials, "fancy goods," and of course, fine jewelry.

Sharpening Our Focus

In 1925, Edmund Beaulieu bought the store from the Springer family and when his son, Ed Beaulieu Jr., joined the business in 1947, they moved it to its present location on Congress Street in downtown Portland and narrowed the focus to jewelry.

Four Generations Strong

Springer’s Jewelers has remained a family-owned business for four generations. Richard Beaulieu joined the family business in 1973, and took over the business from his father in 1988. Springer’s has since welcomed Lilly Beaulieu Mullen, Zoe Beaulieu, and Eddie Beaulieu, the fourth generation, to the company.

Our history is a testament to the heartfelt support of our cherished clients. Thank you for allowing us to be part of your stories, for trusting us with your most precious moments. Here's to another 150 years of shared memories, and to many more chapters of sparkle, love, and enduring connections.

The Legacy of Springer's Locations

Portland History

By the turn of the century, the company had moved from nearby Saccarappa to 515 Congress, where Edmond Beaulieu Sr. acquired the store. In 1947 Ed Beaulieu Jr. joined his father in the business and Springer's moved to its current site at 580 Congress near the intersection with Forest Avenue.

Bath History

Springer's Bath located in the historic downtown dates to 1879 and originally was called A.G. Page Co. Purchased in 1932 by Massachusetts entrepreneur Frank Freeman, Springer's acquired it in 1979. This treasure of the mid-coast appears today as it did in 1870's with its original storefront, mahogany cabinets installed by the Page family, a 14-foot high ceiling, a checkerboard marble floor, and classic hanging brass lamps over the floor cases.

Portsmouth History

Springer's purchased the Portsmouth location in 1971 from the widow of Herman Page, who'd been one of the first certified gemologists in New England. Springer's-Portsmouth was located at the Vaughan Street Mall for nearly 30 years before relocating in 2000 to 100 Market Street, an upscale, five-story building on the corner of Market and Hanover Street in the heart of downtown Portsmouth.

Springer's Philanthropy

Our community allows us to make a living and it is our strong belief that we owe something back to that community, by supporting local organizations and charitable causes. We pride ourselves on the relationships we maintain with local organizations and community leaders in our work to give back to the communities we call home.

Talk of the Town

If I could give a ten star review to Springer's Portland, I would. I've been a Springer's customer for over four years now and I've made the most important jewelry purchases here. Throughout the years, their ability to guide me to make the most prudent purchases, considering a variety of different factors, has been invaluable to me. My wife's engagement ring that I purchased from Springer's continues to receives compliments years later.

My husband was gifted an incredible watch from his father, and we needed it resized. We don’t really know the area so we called Springers to ask questions about adjusting the band. The girl that answered the phone was so kind and helpful. I genuinely felt like they wanted to help us out. Upon arrival, we were warmly greeted by Charlie. He educated us on the piece and was so accommodating for the adjustment. Charlie made this heirloom perfect for my husband and we cannot thank him and this location enough for your help and kindness. Thank you!

I am a loyal customer of Springer’s Jewelers in Portsmouth. Most of my experience is with the repair department and their work is above board and very quick. The staff I have worked with include Becca, Liam and Julia. Their professionalism, knowledge and friendly attitudes are incredible. Having been in the jewelry business myself, I feel confident in telling anyone reading this that they should definitely go to Springer’s!
